El Asador

The authentic Argentinian BBQ

June 232016

Looking for good Argentinian steak?  We think we’ve found a new favourite!

El Asador which means the “grill master” in Spanish should be on your must-eat list.  Tucked right at the start of Radetskystrasse is an unassuming looking restaurant.  This place, in our view, is perfect for meat lovers.

Now, of course you’d be asking, why, what is so special or so different about El Asador versus the others?  For starters, this restaurant is owned and managed by the owner himself.  In fact, he doubles up as the chef and the wine expert.  A restaurant with such a set up could only mean one thing – that the owner/ chef puts his soul into his work and cares about his customers.  Because it matters to him.

image1

The exterior

The menu is rather “small-ish” – which translates to us that this restaurants focuses and sell these few and in other words, freshness.  But oh, the wine list is pretty wide for a small place.  So, yes wine lovers, they have some seriously delicious wines from Argentinia – you should definitely ask.

We ordered up a beinsteak (steak with a bit of bones in), flank steak and a ribeye – yes, yes we seem to like this ribeye cut.  And our verdict… Oh my yumm… it was delicious!  The meat simply has more flavours and yes, generally it has a bit more fat to give you that juicy tastiness.  All the meats were imported from Argentina – except for the T-bone steak.  Whilst we know that Argentinian meat are cut differently and its cows graze on different grass, what is important to note is that the Argentinian cows roam freely on the land and are never given any animal feed at all.

Beinsteak – also known as “Asado de tira”

And of course, some sides to accompany the meats… krautsalat (cabbage salad), sweet potato chippies, some Argentinian sauces (chimmicuri and the house special)

The service was very down to earth and personalised.  The team makes every effort to make you feel comfortable and do their best to answer our many questions about the cuts, the wines and yes, even the cows.  The price for the serving size was decent.  We have not been to Argentina – not yet – but we feel the food here as more authentic or has got a signature of its own.  The meat has its own flavour and tasted different in a delicious way compared to what we’ve had before at other places – we feel that the other places seemed to have adapted themselves in order to please a very wide crowd.  So yes, if you ask us, it feels authentic here at El Asador and we like it!  A lot!

About El Asador

Argentinian restaurant owned by an Austrian and Argentinian duo.  The Argentinian owner runs the daily operation and is the chef (El Asador/ grill master) himself.   This place feels casual, down to earth and the food tastes yummy!

Rating – Sue

  • Total overall rating:  3.7 / 5
  • Ambience :  3 / 5, Casual, but tables were rather too close and rather dimly lit.
  • Location : 4 /5, Easy to get to, very near Wien Mitte and just in front of the tram stop.  You can’t miss it!
  • Food : 4 / 5,  Juicy, tasty steaks and very good dips/ sauces.  It felt authentic and different from the other meat restaurants.
  • Price :  3.5 / 5, Depending on what you choose, the price could only get higher. Argentinian steaks are generally more expensive – it is imported.  And you always have to pay for the sides…  So we paid some €70ish for our meal but it was worth it.
  • Service : 4 / 5, Friendly, attentive and sincere.  Our waitress was the only one on the floor but she did great!  She remembers correctly and despite being swamped, she maintained her smile and her sincere interest in our needs.

Rating – Nicklas

  • Ambience : 3.5 / 5, A very casual place where you can focus on the food and their selection of wine.
  • Location : 3.5 / 5, Very easy to find coming from Wien Mitte or Schwedenplatz.
  • Food : 4 / 5, Fantastic stakes with a proper bbq flavor, what more can you ask for?
  • Price : 3 / 5, The quality of the food is really good but they do know how to charge for some of their higher end courses.
  • Service : 4 / 5, They have a very friendly staff that are happy to help you out with your selection of wine and food.

Said the butcher to the cow

Said the butcher to the cow

Central location and casual dining

June 122016

Let’s meat up!

Hurray!!  This is yet another place for meat lovers.  The restaurant name tells it all.

test 1

What could the butcher probably say?  Voulez vous diner aver moi, c’est soir?  Perhaps…

One bank holiday, we showed up without any reservations made but the staff were very quick to attend to us and despite being heavily reserved, they found us a table really quickly.  Oh yes, they are actually open on a bank holiday which is yay given that so few restaurants are open in vienna on a bank holiday!!  But hold on, they are not open on Sundays and Mondays.

image1

Seated and all ready to nom, nom, nom…

We ordered up a burger called the “chilli burger” and we think this one is flammable.  You have to like seriously spicy food because the burger was possessed by chillies!  It’s got bird’s eye chillies (one of the deadliest on the planet) on the top, inside the patty and they even gave a side ramekin of chillies – just in case you want to go wild.   We could tell that they made the patty themselves – based on the shape and yes, those killer chillies.  However, we felt that this somewhat lacked flavour – apart from the fiery chilli hot.

image-3

Chilli burger.  Caution: Highly flammable.

image3

Close up of the chillies.  Yes, they are real!

Given that this is a restaurant that specialises in beef, we have to say that it would be grand if there were more choices in the steak “department” there were only “rib eye” or “filet”.  We had a rib eye steak and it was really tasty – and we both think that the steak tasted better than the burger.  The price is really good for the quality and size.

image4

Rib-eye steak with onion rings

The atmosphere was chillaxed and the staff were friendly.  Although they are located smack in the centre and next to Le Meridien, they weren’t at all snooty but were very friendly and chatty in fact.  One observation though, the spacing between the seats certainly needs a revisit.  We noticed how other tables struggled or simply bumped into each other.  Other than that, this is a decent place in a great location which is easy going and serves burgers at a good price!

About said the butcher to the Cow

A very hip and modern restaurant that specialises in beef.  Located just next to Le Meridien, this restaurant is just a very short walk away from the Opera and yes, for the party-goers, it is near to the Albertina.  And the Volksgarten…

Rating – Sue

  • Total overall rating:  3.3 / 5
  • Ambience :  3 / 5, Casual, easy-going and modern.
  • Location : 4 /5, Very very central and super easy to get to.
  • Food : 3 / 5,  The burger was alright, presentation was well done but it tasted somewhat so-so…
  • Price :  3 / 5, It is decent pricing for the location and burger size.
  • Service : 3.5 / 5, Service is good.  Our waitress was very friendly.

Rating – Nicklas

  • Total overall rating: 3.4 / 5
  • Ambience : 3 / 5, A very modern setting.
  • Location : 4 / 5, They have a nice terrace and very good location in the centre.
  • Food : 3 / 5, Given the name of the restaurant, I have to say that I was expecting a bit more. The steak that I had was ok, but nothing more than that.
  • Price : 3 / 5, The price is alright considering the location and the portion.
  • Service : 4 / 5, Service was attentive, kind and very fast.

Unkai Japanese restaurant

Unkai Japanese restaurant

Sushi brunch buffet to start to the day

January 102016

Sushi brunch buffet sounds just about right

And Unkai could well be the place for you.  Because we adore sushi and sashimi (among our many other delicious foodie vices), we decided to launch 2016 in a very delicious way – a sushi brunch buffet!  Yes indeed, all-you-can-eat sushiness right before your eyes.  So, please do come hungry.  After all, we have to add, the price tag is quite hefty…

Located on the 7th floor of the Grand Hotel are 2 pretty popular restaurants – Unkai (Japanese) and Le Ciel (French, and definitely our next foodie stop).

image1

The main entrance

image2

The entrance to buffet heaven!

We have visited Unkai a couple of times and we really like the idea of a lazy and yummy sushi brunch.   The restaurant was almost fully seated – which we feel says a lot about this place.  And if you are ready to get serious about sushi eating (or brunching), this is potentially a good spot.  And of course, you can opt for ala-carte.  Sushi brunches are only available on the weekends and public holidays.  And yes, do call in to reserve in advance.

To kick things off, we were served with light appetisers and a warm bowl of miso soup. This is part of the brunch buffet deal.

After the starters, it is the green light for “GO!” or proceed and get busy at the buffet spread.  Don’t be shy or you’ll go hungry. Attack!

On one side, there’s always a spread on maki sushi and tamago (Japanese omelette).

image_3

Some of the maki sushi

But take it from us and head on straight to where the chefs are.  This is the deal, folks!  Here is where you’ll get to choose your preferred Nigiri (hand-pressed) sushi.  And our tip again: always check/ ask for spicy tuna.  And if you feel confused, just ask for one each and come back later for your preferred ones.

image_4 (3)

The chef’s stand.  Here is where you get your nigiri sushi. Hint, hint…

image_3 (3)

The selection available for hand-pressed or nigiri sushi

image_5 (2)

A close-up because one must inspect…

The buffet spread is pretty decent – it has prawns (Ebi), squid (ika), tuna (maguro), salmon (sake), salmon roe (ikura) and so on.  But Su was missing a few other “exotic” options such as clams (aware), grilled eel (unagi) and sea urchin (uni).  O yea, you definitely have to try the sea urchin!!  And unfortunately, no Temaki (hand rolled) sushi either.  Well, serving Temaki at a buffet might cause quite a congestion…

image_8

Exercise 1 – stretching

image_7

Exercise 2 – a light warm up (we like to think)

image_2 (2)

Exercise 3 – cardio (well it is good for our heart)

image_4 (2)

Exercise 4 – lift up those bars… sushi…

The service was good.  We caught pieces of hard shells in our soft-shell crab and a bone in our spicy tuna nigiri.  The bone was pretty large.  And if you happen to eat your nigiri in one bite or two, this can be a problem.

But as we said, their service was good.  We showed the bone to one of the waitresses when she cleared our plates.  And in a few seconds, she came back to apologise after speaking to the kitchen.  Followed by the manager-on-duty herself.

And just when we thought it will be only verbal apologies from the team, they gave us desserts that were especially prepared for us as an atonement.  We thought that was nice that they remembered our feedback and valued it too.

image_2 (4)

And final exercise – let’s cool down with desserts.  Pumpkin brûlée.

About Unkai
A gourmet Japanese restaurant that serves both sushi and teppanyaki.  Note that the sushi brunch buffet is served on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays only.   And not to be mistaken for the sushi bar (by the same name – i.e. “Unkai sushi bar”) on the ground floor.

Rating – Sue

  • Total overall rating:   3.7 / 5
  • Ambience :  4.5 / 5, Fancy, formal and you should dress up.  The others do.
  • Location : 4 / 5, Super central.  This place is smacked right in the city itself.
  • Food : 3 / 5, It was good overall but I felt that the Maguro somehow didn’t taste quite “it”.  The rice somewhat tasted “flat”.
  • Price :  3 / 5, It comes with a price tag.  You do pay for the location and ambience.
  • Service : 4 / 5, Service is great, professional and individualised.  When alerted about the bones, they took our feedback seriously and came to apologise in-person a couple of times.  They even gave us special desserts.

Rating – Nicklas

  • Total overall rating:  4 / 5
  • Ambience :  4 / 5, As you can expect from being located in the Grand Hotel, the restaurant is grand and a bit formal. Might not be the place to bring the kids who can’t sit still.
  • Location : 4.5 / 5, Right on the ring, you cannot miss it.
  • Food : 3.5 / 5,  We have eaten here a number of times and for most of the times, the food is a perfect “4”. Way better than your neighborhood sushi stand, but unfortunately it not as good as what you will find in Tokyo.
  • Price :  3.5 / 5, If you are hungry and want stack the plates of food, or have a sushi eating contest with your friends, this is your spot! And best of all, you can do it in style!
  • Service : 4.5 / 5, The service is really good and they pay very good attention to the customer.

Love at first bite

December 12015

Delicious, amazing food.  Yes, we found it!

We first walked past this restaurant and out of curiosity, we decided to give it a try.  And we fell in love with it on our first bite.

Hmmm, where do we start?

We quite like this place that we came back a couple times more at different occassions.  And tried out even more items from their menu.  It is a good place and we give them our thumbs up.

Let’s start with of course, the starters. We tried the foie gras.  Although it wasn’t prepared like the French style, the taste of the foie gras was rich and had a creamy texture.

The yummy foie gras

Seafood compote

We also tried the beef tartar.  It was simply fabulous and felt like it melted right away in our mouths. You could taste the quality in every luscious bite and we never wanted it to end. Unfortunately, the soft-shell crab was a miss though – it was still chewy and rather greasy too.

Beef tartar.  This is yummy!

And for our mains, we absolutely loved them and were very happy.  Our meat had a beautiful smoky aroma and flavour – yes, they use open fire!  Steak or lamb kissed by charcoal is the best.

In fact, so are their salads – it was embraced lightly by the fire.  For that extra wow!

Even more meat

Rib-eye steak

And here comes the sweet endings.  Deserts….

The ambience is gorgeous down to its very detail and service staff was professional and alert.  We actually booked ourselves in the first district but we were asked politely if we would go to the other outlet in the 4th.  Well, their ventilator was not working that night in the first outlet.  And when we arrived in the 4th, the reception was helpful and attentive.  We had a lot of private space to ourselves and we love it!

image_5

A pretty interior of one of Artner’s outlets

We would certainly come back but we must warn you, it does come with a hefty price tag.  So this isn’t your everyday restaurant – well, we don’t eat at restaurants everyday and we cook too!  But our point is, the food is fabulous!  We’ll definitely come back for even more!

About Artner

A well-known restaurant in Vienna for its quality grill.  Well, of course, they use the charcoal and hence, the lovely flavour.  They have 2 outlets in Vienna – in district 4 and 1 – so please ensure that you called and turn up at the right one.

Cafe Goldegg

Cafe Goldegg

Classic and charming Viennese cafe

November 232015

Classic dishes served in a traditional Viennese cafe

Yes, that is quite an easy find.  If you are in the main historic centre.  But what if you want to shy away from the hustle and bustle, and loud tourists?    And yet you do not wish to drive off to far?  We hear you!  And found the place!

And found breakfast too!

When we first walked in, our first impression is that this place is proper old-school.  At least, the interior furnishing and the style gave us that feel.

image_3 (2)

Snooker table in the middle of the cafe… but why not?

image_4 (2)

Standard old-school tables and chairs

image_5 (2)

Old fire place.  In true old-school fashion

We opted for the Viennese and English breakfast options. And it was goooood

This is definitely one good spot for brekkie.  Well, the menu dedicated a good 2 page to just breakfast – mostly warm items.  Although it is not as extensive as most other food establishments, the options you find here will serve you well.

image_1 (2)

Capuccino and orange juice – because they make breakfast complete

image_3

The fry up (or English breakfast) is always a good idea

image_5

The Viennese breakfast – looking slightly healthier than its English counterpart

Our orders were brought to us very promptly and the serving size were just right.  We also liked that the staff very much left us to our personal space and when we asked some questions and stretched our very basic Deutsch, they were very kind and helpful to explain to us in English and even encouraged us to practice our very basic German.  We thought that was very sweet and friendly.

We were not stuffed – but nicely full – and were about to leave when… oh no, on our way out, we saw this gorgeous selection of yummy cakes!  Well, there is always a next time and there’s always discipline, because… Christmas is coming!  Time to slim up!  Right…

Because Vienna is home for cakes

And even more cakes – in case you have the space…

About Cafe Goldegg

Humble and friendly traditional Viennese cafe.  Their menu isn’t extensive which probably indicate that all items are prepared on-location and not bought pre-made.  In other words,  they specialise on what they do best, make it fresh and a very good sign.

  • Food: 3 / 5, Food is tasty.  Although, the non-extensive menu can be a plus or a minus depending on how you look at it.

Rating – Nicklas

Beaulieu Epicerie fine & Bistrot

Beaulieu Epicerie fine & Bistrot

Le Petit Paris à Vienne (Little Paris in Vienna)

November 82015

Love French food?  Then this is your happy place!

Freyung passage.  Yes, this is where you find it.  Stroll along the historic centre of gorgeous Vienna and enter this passage, pass the statue, pass the bankomat (if needed), follow the smell, walk just a bit further and viola you’re there.  Treasure hunt, you say?  It is treasure indeed!  And one that is fit for the kings and their bellies.

image_1 (2)

The statue at the entrance from Herrengasse

image (2)

The exterior of the bistro along the passage – which is just as pretty as the inside.

One big plus of having a meal at Beaulieu is not only the delicious food on the menu.  But also, it is all about prettiness.  The place, the decor, the location and the people – if you enjoy people watching that is.  And do sit outside – ok, maybe not in winter.

image_3 (3)

The entrance.  Please, welcome yourselves in!

And speaking of pretty food – they also taste pretty good in the mouth.  Now, take a look at their display!  If weight gain is a myth, we would apply and qualify for permanent residence in this dangerously-yummy bistro.  And munch our way through.  And be best friends with the chefs.  And… oh, look at those mouth-watering pastries, those delicious (and yes, smelly) cheese and oooh, what a menu selection!

image_4

The mouth-watering, jaw-dropping, we-want-to-eat-all selection of goodies.

image_3

Cheese – just a few from the 450 types available from France.

We’ve been here a few times and now, we decided out their breakfast menu.  And a standard French breakfast must come with its croissant and pain au chocolat.  And also a baguette.

image_2 (3)

Reservation?  Yes, it does come handy here.

image_1 (3)

Very decent Pain au Chocolat, Baguette and Croissant.

We also tried their omelette au saumon – which however is a little too generous with salt.  Less is more really – especially salt.

image

Pretty and salty omelette au saumon.

Nicklas, who has spent a couple of years living in France, said that he approved of the croissant.  And the pain au chocolat.  And the baguette.  And I, as the goodie foodie girlfriend, trusted him and ate on.   And went on to marvel at the selection of food items that we could potentially buy and save the French economy.  Oh yes, this is why men should have a girlfriend (or wife).  Women are scientifically proven to be economy-friendly.  (You’re welcome guys!)

Let’s just say it was tough to leave this place.  The food was great, the selection was tempting but our waistline shouted, “hello… we need to digest first!”  and so, all right, we left.  With a promise that we shall return.  This is our happy place!  (Ok, we do have a few more.  Job hazard as a foodie.)

About Beaulieu

Little French bistro in the historic centre of Vienna.  The decor reminds us fondly of France – with a hint of Paris and then, a bit of Provence.  Oh, we aren’t that fussy.  It’s just details really.  The food was great and we forgot the rest!

Ratings – Sue

  • Total overall rating: 3.5 / 5
  • Ambience: 4 / 5, Cute and feels like you traveled back to France.  Or Paris.
  • Location: 5 / 5, Very centrally located.  If your phone/ GPS failed on you, get a new one because it is super easy to get here.
  • Food: 3.5 / 5, Flaky croissant and pain au chocolat, I could go for more but hey, we don’t do that even in Paris plus there’s food after food (called desserts and then, nibbles).  The omelette was tasty but it was a little over-kissed by the salt.
  • Price: 2 / 5, All right, let’s be honest.  The food is decent but the price is steep
  • Service: 3 / 5, The staff were friendly and helpful.

Ratings – Nicklas

  • Total overall rating: 3.7 / 5
  • Ambience: 4 / 5, The small restaurant is decorated exactly as you imagine a small French “bistro” would look like in a Hollywood production.  The guests though are taken up by the friendly atmosphere of the staff, bringing together a warm and comfortable atmosphere as to the restaurant.
  • Location: 4.5 / 5, Located in the elegant Freyung Passage with its vaulted sealing and massive pilasters, this is a perfect spot to escape from reality and go on a food journey.
  • Food: 4.5 / 5, For a gourmand as myself, this is a fabulous spot to go to when the craving for a real French croissant or baguette comes creeping up in the back of your mind.  “Just like in Paris” is true when it comes to their patisseries.
  • Price: 2.5 / 5, You do pay for the location here, but if you pick the right food, it does make up for it.
  • Service: 3 / 5, Completely fine staff.

Classic dishes with a touch of ViaMichelin!

Along a little canal in the lush green stadtpark, you find a Michelin restaurant.  It certainly sits pretty with an open terrace that is perfect for guests who wished to be kissed by the sun as they dine.

Looks inviting, don’t you think?

The restaurant serves Austrian classics from schnitzels to goulash (and they are famous for this).  And if you’re unsure or feel like pampering yourself, you could simply ask for a degustation menu.

At the entrance, we noticed that they have a wide selection of cheese – including some of our absolute favourites from France.

IMG_6232

A wide selection and this is just the beginning.

They’ve got about 120 different types of cheese – simply wicked!  Because we want to have a bit of everything, we opted for a cheese platter.

There were many options of cheese platter and you could even pick or assemble your own.  We love cheese in general and have tried a lot from various countries, so the option “Austria-Italy-France” sounded like just what we needed.  With 9 pieces of heaven, you will be left speechless.

It was a wise choice as we wash this down with a bit of wine.

A touch of heaven

Aaah, we’re loving it!

About Meierei im Stadtpark

A posh restaurant with a touch of Michelin class.  You can also come here for breakfast and chillax outdoors by the river.  Do make a reservation though!

Rating – Sue

  • Total overall rating:  3.8 / 5
  • Ambience :  3 / 5, Formal and rather uppity. I feel it is rather flashy – it is the place to be seen rather than to dine and actually appreciate good food. I feel that there are places that are classy, elegant and definite formal but they can still be friendly. The atmosphere at this place was alright but you certainly feel like you have to behave in order to fit right in…..
  • Location : 5 / 5, Fabulous & cleverly done. Central, by the river, in the park, quiet enough and yet very easily accessible.
  • Food : 4 / 5, They were very good cheese but I have to confess I am no a cheese expert here. They did a great job in helping us pair the wine with our cheese platter.
  • Price : 4 / 5, This is a Michelin spot, expect a price tag. But go for it! Why not, pamper yourself!
  • Service : 3 / 5, Our waitress was kind but would be grand if we could get explanations about our cheese and not advised to read the little cards given.  We knew she can’t quite speak good English and that was probably why but it’s a shame given that a good portion of the customers were not locals..

Rating – Nicklas

  • Ambience : 3.5 / 5, The restaurant is very stylish and elegant. A very good spot to be seen and you can slightly feel that the want to keep a certain standard.
  • Location : 5 / 5, They have a very nice and calm spot in the park with a perfect view.
  • Food : 5 / 5, If you are into fabulous food and the tastiest of cheese, this is your spot. The cheese plate that we had holds up to some of best cheese plates that I have had during my time living in south of France.
  • Price : 4 / 5, The price is descent given the quality of food and prime location.
  • Service : 4 / 5, This is a spot that has a good reputation for food, and unfortunately they know it. The waiters are very kind but also know that.

Das Loft

Das Loft

A restaurant and bar with a view!

October 312015

Here is where to chill-out with a panoramic view of Vienna.

We came here for drinks.  The view is great and the ambience is classy.  Das Loft is a good place to take your love to for a romantic date night.  Come dressed up because the crowd generally does – at least smart casual.

This place is somehow always full each time we are here.  It would be best if you could sit away from the bar, sink (somewhat) lazily into the seats and people watch – this will be the highlight of your evening!  Sit back and relax as you slowly sip through a couple of aperitifs before dinner.

image

The view of gorgeous Vienna

The drinks menu was alright and sometimes, we ask for items that weren’t on it.  If you’re lucky, they might whip it up for you.  Su asked for her favourite lychee martini and it was not on the list – at least at that time when we were here.

Su is a nibbler and we need to constantly feed her even in between meals.  And this gave us the chance to peek into their bar menu.  They have changed the menu for little nibbles – these little bites aren’t little anymore.  They used to serve small finger foods such as spring rolls, meat on skewers and such – which are all brilliant for sharing.

image_2

Lychee Martini, Martini on the rocks and our not-so-little nibble

We would advise to come here for drinks only and head off elsewhere for a meal.  It comes with a price tag and unless you’re willing to pay.  And our friends who have been here weren’t impressed when it comes to quality to price ratio.

This is not quite your typical restaurant and it probably feels more like a canteen or a small-ish no-frills establishment but the food is well worth it!  We found this place by pure chance and we ordered the standard items – the famous Vietnamese Pho and we love it!!

About Das Loft

On the 18th floor of Sofitel and with ceiling-high glass windows, you do get a good view of the city and Stephansdom. This is a sleeky bar with an urban feel in the heart of classic, beautiful Vienna.  Do dress up, this is a spot to people watch.

Rating – Sue

  • Total overall rating:  3.8 / 5
  • Ambience :  5 / 5, Great views, classy and romantic for a date in the city.
  • Location : 5 / 5, Perfect location, super central and easy to get to.
  • Food : 2.5 / 5, The menu didn’t quite serve nibbles or finger foods for a bar, but the items each look like a meal.  The taste was alright but nothing to rave about.
  • Price : 3 / 5, Was decent for a 5 star establishment.
  • Service : 3.5 / 5, The staff is generally good, swift and attentive – like in any other 5 star hotel establishment.

Rating – Nicklas

  • Total overall rating: 3.6 / 5
  • Ambience : 4 / 5, Classy and elegant setting with one of the best views of the city. Do come before the sun start to set to see that city transform in colors before you.
  • Location : 4 / 5, Just out of Schwedenplatz and just at a spot where you can see the whole city.
  • Food : 3 / 5, I was expecting more from the bar food at the 5 star establishment. Not too much to choose from and not too much in terms of finger food for a small nibble. On the other hand, their cocktails are fantastic!
  • Price : 3 / 5, Within the price range that you would expect for the location and such a view.
  • Service : 4 / 5, Very good staff! They come with a smile and are cheerful to speak with.

Nguyen’s Pho House

Nguyen’s Pho House

Homemade, herbal & fresh Vietnamese food.

October 252015

Eureka! We think we found a decent Vietnamese place!

This is not quite your typical restaurant and it probably feels more like a canteen or a small-ish no-frills establishment but the food is well worth it!  We found this place by pure chance and we ordered the standard items – the famous Vietnamese Pho and we love it!!

Pho is a staple and a basic must-have in Vietnamese meal.  It is a noodle soup and the secret to perfection lies in its broth – which is also our criteria to yumminess.  It has to taste light with a hint of herbs.  And this soup is gorgeous because you can explore the flavours by squeezing in the lime, or adding more fresh greens or spicing it up further with chillies!

image_3

All time favourite and famous – Vietnamese Phở and the accompanying condiments

And we also ordered Bun Bo La Lot, this was just as yummy.  This is beef that has been marinated in lemongrass, grilled and wrapped in wild betel leaf.  If this isn’t yummy, it’s alright – more for us and we don’t complain!  Bo La lot in simple words is spring roll with a twist or perhaps a Vietnamese style wrap.

image_1 (2)

Bun Ba La Lot.  Humble-looking but truly delicious.

Humble and simple in its décor, this place has caught our attention because of its aroma.  It has an open kitchen concept concept and they cook right in front of you – yes you smell it right away and the smell also sticks on to you.  It is a job hazard but we accept this.

image_4 (2)

The extensive menu hangs above the chef and the open kitchen

We’ve been hunting for decent Vietnamese food for a while now and we found this place by pure chance.  District 7, if you don’t know it by now, is home to several cool and trendy food establishments.  It’s like a food treasure hunt – we’ve been discovering quite a few cool spots here. Just like this wonderful Vietnamese place.

If you have found more cool places and would like to share, feel free to drop us a line!  We are very happy to come on over and eat!

About Nguyen’s Pho House

We like this place because it feels authentic and reminds us of a typical food court or those hawker centres in Singapore.  It is also family owned and the menu seems to offer only Vietnamese food items and not a mix of everything from the Asian continent – which is typical for other Asian food establishment on the European continent.

Rating – Sue

  • Total overall rating:  4.2 / 5
  • Ambience :  4 / 5, Humble, down to earth, relaxing, a no-frills place but no-compromise at good food.
  • Location : 3.5 / 5, It is located in the 7th but requires a bit of walking and combing through the street.
  • Food : 5 / 5, Balanced, not overwhelmingly salty, I will definitely come back!.
  • Price : 4 / 5, Quite pricey if you compare to other places with more “ambience” but for the decent food, I say okay…
  • Service : 4.5 / 5, They didn’t hover over us or breathe down our necks, and were prompt whenever we needed their attention.

Rating – Nicklas

  • Total overall rating: 4 / 5
  • Ambience : 4 / 5, Small and humble where the focus on in the good food!
  • Location : 3.5 / 5, They are located after the Lerchenfelder Straße so easy to find.
  • Food : 4.5 / 5,  They perfectly hit that “home cooked meal” feeling with a focus on the flavor and balanced taste. That its also good sized portions makes this a place keep in your memory.
  • Price : 4 / 5, Not the cheapest place around but then they do make it up with serving you good quality food!
  • Service : 4 / 5, Swift and tentative.

El Gaucho

El Gaucho

Made in Argentina, taste like heaven, served in Vienna. Yessss!

September 262015

Steaks, gorgeous steaks!

If you are a steak lover, you probably know that Argentina is famous for its top quality steak.  Where can we find this in Vienna and really, just how good is an Argentinian steak versus the rest?

Well, to find this out, we’d have to eat steaks at every meal everyday for the next years.  Awww, isn’t life a bit rough life on a foodie.  Anyhow, we took the challenge to check out an Argentinian steak restaurant and here’s our experience…

image_4

A very generous serving of Tenderloin steak, churrasco at 350g. Yummy is the word.

For a restaurant that is part of a 5 star hotel, they were quite slow in attending to us.  We stood by the entrance and the wait staff attended to other tables, brought food and drinks and in short – walked past us without offering to sit us at our tables.  But is this perhaps, more of a shy attitude?  We noticed that waiters and waitresses generally do not look at you (the guests) in the eye when serving you.  Yes, almost hardly ever.

Things speed up once you were seated.  We were offered a bread basket and some butter even before the menu came which was rather nice – but yes, you will be charged for the couvert at the end.

image_1

The sides if you ever need to pimp up your plate.

The food was delicious.  We ordered an ox tartare and we could feel its smooth texture and the freshness of the meat.  However, we felt that the actual tartare flavour was completely drowned in something vinegar-like which was a shame.  Because we felt that it was otherwise super gorgeous!

image_3

Tartar made of ox meat.

Then, we had huge steaks each – at least two of us from the group did!  The largest portions possible – rib eye (600gm churrassco) and largest tenderloin (350gm churrasco).  It was fabulous and we love it!  The only catch was Su has been nibbling continuously all day prior to dinner.

image_2 (2)

Rose fried Tenderloin on a bed of rice. (No it isn’t lazy food just because it is on a “bed of rice”)

image_1 (2)

The man steak. You’ve gotta have this, mate! An awesome serving of Ribeye steak at 600g churrasco. Bring it on!!

The meat was tender and moist.  Lightly bruised on the outside, we can taste its flavor as we sank our teeth into its juicy gorgeousness.

image_3 (2)

There’s always space for dessert.

We have to add that El Gaucho has a superb selection of fine wines.  We decided to go for something not too barrique so we could fully enjoy the flavor of the meat.  Although we picked a not-too-expensive bottle, the wine was really good.

image

Thirsty?  Do not fear for great wines are here!  We found the water hole!!

The ambience was not super formal and could be termed as rather relaxed for a restaurant that is part of a 5 star hotel.  However, the acoustics seems to need a bit of work.  Perhaps, it is because the restaurant seems to be oddly placed in the centre of a lobby giving you an illusion that your words might just echo.

Overall, we love the meat!  And we’ll definitely come back! Oh they have an “after work steak” between 17:00 to 18:00 – that is when Su is hungriest.  So we might just be here again.  And very soon.  And erhem, yes, advanced reservation is highly recommended.

About The restaurant

Steak restaurant serving fine Black Angus beef from Argentina.  This is amongst our top favourite for quality steak!

Semi-casual dining but it felt neither outdoors nor indoors.  The “inside” seating area gives an impression that things could get noisy.  Whilst the “outside” gives a bit of a breather.  However, the “outside” seating is still inside (it is enclosed indoors) with a high ceiling so we felt like we could hear noise from every corners.

  • Price : 4 / 5, It comes with a price tag but it was well worth it! Treat yourself to quality!

  • Ambience : 3.5 / 5, This it a perfect spot for a business lunch or night out with your friends enjoy the food. The interior is perfectly stylish but its fairly close between the tables and a bit on the loud side so don’t go for a romantic date.
  • Location : 4 / 5, Its at the back of the Sofitel so very easy to get to.
  • Food : 4 / 5, Best ancho (rib-eye) stake I have had in Vienna so far! The meet was excellent and with the perfect amount of fat to make it juicy, perfectly pink, and packed with taste. The ox tartare on the other hand could be better.
  • Price : 3.5 / 5, Its not cheap but did you expect that from a directly imported stake from Argentina?
  • Service : 4 / 5, Except for the entry, it was very nice! The food arrived quickly and the staff was both swift and kind.

Die Küche at Kempinski

Breakfast for kings (and queens alike)

September 202015

Let’s wake up to happiness!  This is the place.

It’s the weekend and you fancy a treat.  It’s a day you want and should be spoilt rotten, and you wish to and will eat everything.  Yes, everything – quite literally.  Croissants, eggs, fruits, jams, hams and other cold cuts, more pastries, salads, hot chocolates, champagne – yes, yes bring more, more!  The question is where?  We tried out Die Küche at Kempinski and we absolutely love it!

Known for quality, the atmosphere is calm, quiet and posh (of course) and yet we felt very relaxed.  Maybe it was the service, maybe it was the food…

The ala-carte breakfast menu

The breakfast buffet is a wide and generous spread. We treated ourselves to what they termed as a “half breakfast” – everything from the spread minus the warm stuff (such as warm eggs) and this alone filled us up.  And they do have ala-carte breakfast which seems really exciting – they’ve got Dim Sum.  So, we’ll definitely come back to check this one out!

image (2)

Cereal selection – part of the wide buffet spread

image_1 (2)

Dried fruits, nuts & such.  For a balanced & healthy start of the day

The pastries and breads were really good.  Afterall, their supplier is the yummy Josef Bäckerei who is known for quality and organic products.  So you do know that Kempinski buys quality from trusted sources.

image_3 (2)

Rolls of bread, for loaf lovers

And yes it even has a little corner to appeal to your hungry little monsters.  Your little gourmets might just walk away as super satisfied little customers with that feeling that this is one restaurant who listened to their customers’ needs.  Well, it is sugar-rush-friendly!

The kiddy buffet for our little gourmet

Despite the hefty price tag, this is a great place to give yourself a treat.  Why not?  Life is short, pamper yourself sometimes!  If not, all the time!

Dona Irma

Your friendly family-owned Mexican restaurant

September 152015

Mexican food in Vienna?

An international city like Vienna certainly has a wide range of fairly decent restaurants, doesn’t it?  But how does Vienna fair when it comes to Mexican food?  We decided to seek for more options.

Dona Irma is a family owned restaurant and the service is fabulous!  We were warmly greeted by a young lady who spoke fluent English and was explaining to us that Irma is the name of the chef who is a Mexican.  And yes, Irma is also her mother.  Her father is the gentleman behind the bar who has been generous with the tequila in our Margarita.  Oh yes, the Margarita had a kick – or more.

image (3)

Colourful menu

image_1 (3)

And even more colourful interior

image

The mega strong margarita – the bartender was indeed generous

The presentation was so-so – it was nothing wow impressive but very humble and simple.  And the nachos seemed a bit too dry and we could do with more cheese.  Perhaps this is the original way of eating nachos and we got used to the tex-mex style?  We have yet to visit Mexico so we can never confirm if what we found here is the real deal – or anything close.  But we remain suspicious…

image_1

Some nibbles made of pork skin

image_1 (2)

Empanadas – decent and mild

image_2

This was fairly mild – we could take in more chilli.  Perhaps, at our next visit. Perhaps.

The dish weren’t at all spicy and we have been sold by friends who lived in Mexico and also our experience at other Mexican restaurants to expect fire, chilli, burn.  But this was mild.  And to be fair, when we told the young waitress, she told us that she could have made it hot… oh well, next time then.

The Empanadas were delicious and was light.  We did not try the barbacoa soup which is said to be a top favourite amongst the guest.  This soup is said to be quite filling so well, there’s always a next time.  The service was great and they were friendly so we might pop in again and check out other items on their menu.

About Dona Irma

A small friendly restaurant owned and run by a husband and wife team.  The husband is Austrian and his wife, a Mexican lady, is the chef.  If you are lucky, their daughter will help attend to the tables and she speaks fluent English.

Another cool spot to chillax

September 82015

Hungry on a hot summer Sunday?

Yes, always! But where can we go and tank up our bellies?  And we must add, without the need to evaporate under the summer heat. We think we’ve found yet another cool spot!

The staff seem to leave us alone and do not breathe down our neck every few seconds.  When asked why the name “1500 foodmakers”, they explained that because there are 1500 minutes in 25 hours (as being part of the 25hours hotel).

image_1

The entrance to the restaurant

image_2

The hanging “garden” in the restaurant

The menu serves us Italian classics but we have to say, they could expand a bit more on the variety.  We were very hungry and we could only choose from a small selection of pasta and pizzas mainly.  Although, perhaps this is a reflection that the restaurant focuses on what they do best and prepare the items from scratch – instead of having them pre-made.  Perhaps, perhaps, perhaps.

The pizza was very tasty, it was of a decent size and was of a good texture.  It helped fill our hunger and our bellies felt happier.

The pappardelle ragu alla Bolognese was alright.  The pasta was al-dente but the taste felt a little too light.  It was lacking the meat flavour in the sauce but seemed to have more herbal in flavour – almost vegetarian.  We felt it was very generous on the parsley and tomato but should pimp up on the meat flavour.

image_1

The pizza – looking so inviting – good for the hungry

image_4

The plateful of pasta

image_6

Himbeer soda and home-made iced tea.  The latter was pretty decent.

This restaurant gave us a modern, grunge-like and young feeling that you get from New York.  The interior décor is very unique and yes this place offers free wifi and its indoor seating has got AC!!  So this is perfect for taking a slow lunch, chilling out, having a coffee and then chillaxing even more…

image_3

The bar – feels grungy to us

And a hanging swing-chair in the lobby?  This place has a character!

About 1500 Food Makers

This is a restaurant that gives you the feeling of a modern and cosmopolitan place.  As they said it on their website, the décor was inspired by restaurants in Santa Monica, LA and New York (so our guess was right!  Yessss!!)

Rating – Sue

  • Total overall rating: 2.9/ 5, In a nutshell, it was alright.  It wasn’t bad but it wasn’t anything to scream about either.
  • Ambience : 2.5 / 5, It has a style of its own and an underground feel.  Young and different, yet ambitious and creative. This place has a relaxing and “familiar” feeling – so you feel like you could chillax, take your time and won’t have any staff hover over you or breathe down your neck.
  • Location : 3 / 5, Fairly easy to get to.
  • Food : 3 / 5, Was alright and I have to say it failed to impress me or be anything outstanding.  To be fair, my hungry belly didn’t complain either.
  • Price : 3 / 5, It was not too pricey, so it was acceptable.
  • Service : 3 / 5, The staff were kind and gave us the space which was fabulous!  But it seemed like they avoided having eye contact with us.  Perhaps they were shy?

Rating – Nicklas

  • Total overall rating: 3 / 5
  • Ambience : 4 / 5, We have visited this place during the day and in the evening, and I have to say that the place really come to live in the evening when everyone is getting the party started. It’s a really nice crowd that comes here and you will definitely get into a good vibe for continuing the evening.
  • Location : 3.5 / 5, Not difficult to get to, and a very good spot to grab a pizza before heading up to their rooftop terrace and bar.
  • Food : 3.5 / 5, Now my Italian friends would probably not agree at all, but I liked their pizza. The dough had a nice crust and you get a proper amount of topping.
  • Price : 4 / 5, The pricing was completely fine for the the quality of the food.
  • Service : 4 / 5, The food and drinks arrived prompt and with Austrian efficiency. Unfortunately the service does not always come with a smile but everyone can have a bad day.

Steak, ribs and mmmmm… meat….

We love meat. Meat, yes, meat is good. And especially when it is cooked over wood fire or charcoal. Imagine the aroma, that smoky flavour that kisses the outer part of the meat making it slightly crispy crusty-like on the outside, and tender, red and juicy on the inside. And oh that gorgeous sensation when this gorgeous piece of meat touches your lips… Oh yes, our massive rib-eye steak was grilled on wood fire. It was good stuff!

It was an impromptu plan and because it was so hot. And we were in the city, so we decided to check out this restaurant. And we were happy we did it!

Centrally located and just next to Palais Coburg, it was certainly a wise choice when it comes to the location. The atmosphere is friendly, modern, chic and yet relaxed. It is a place where you feel you can have a good time with your friends over some good food and occasionally roar out loud with laughter – without having to feel conscious or stared at. Or being hushed at. Yeah that happened before… Well, good food and good friends is the equation for laughter and rolling good times, n’est pas?

The exterior

The steak – uncut – is a serving for two & hungry

The service was excellent. Our server, Michele, is ultra-friendly, attentive and funny to boot. He explained about the Huth chain of restaurants – that the owner is Mr. Huth and he has 2 boys. One is named Max and the other, Möritz. This explained the names of the restaurants.

Our steak was gorgeous as Michele promised it to be. It had the right tenderness and texture, the right flavour and not overwhelming. And because we were hungry, we ordered the bbq spare ribs. Nicklas is the connoisseur of bbq spare ribs here. It was well marinated without being overly done. You can taste the smoky charcoal and yet the meat falls off the bones really easily. So it is nicely done! And it passed Nicklas’ QC when it comes to spare-ribs.

About Huth de max

A chain family-owned restaurant with a different theme each, Huth da Max is the grill house for meat lovers!  Be warned that they do close on the dot at 12 midnight – ala Cinderella.  Alright, it a legal requirement on all F&B establishments especially when there are residential tenants just within reach.  But honestly, we were disappointed that they didn’t ask us for any desserts.  Quite fancy some sweet endings…

Los Mexikas

A small place with a big heart

Finding decent Mexican food in Vienna has been tougher than we expected.  In fact, we’ve been testing and scouting around for months.  And Los Mexikas is one place that is worthy of a mention – or even some kudos for a job well done!

Our waiter was very friendly and we liked him from the very start.  As some of us probably know by now, genuinely good service is almost unheard of.  Yes it is pretty hard to come by in Vienna.  He was trilingual and spoke fluent Spanish, German and English.  He answered the phone in Spanish and swapped into English effortlessly.  You know that the person is nice when you could feel his(or her)  smile through the phone receiver.  We had a feeling that we’ll be well taken care of.

They have certainly invested in the interior décor and they are quite elaborate in the colours, paintings and style.  However, in the hot summer months, you might be better off seated outdoors – they’ve got no AC.  Well, unless you are ready to brave it through.

We recommend that you check out the Aguas Frescas – this is a mix of freshly squeezed Mango, Papaya, Pineapples, Strawberry and cucumber.  Sounds exotic?  It was good and refreshing which is perfect for the summer!

Refreshing juices. Aguas Frescas is on the right.

We ordered a Nacho con Pollo as a starter.  The serving size was decent and it was a good presentation.  However, something didn’t taste quite right there.  Nicklas felt the chicken tasted more like tuna and Su felt that the chicken tasted sour-ish.  We don’t know why we didn’t send it back to the kitchen – maybe we were just too hungry and dug in right away.

We had the Gringa de Chorizo as the main.  This dish was well done.  The flavours were right and if you want to pimp it up (i.e. add more chilli), they supplied us with it and oh la la, it did come with a good kick.  Su went in for more!

This is a family owned chain – which makes it interesting.  In fact, they told us that they even have a third outlet in Bratislava!  They said that from time to time, they invite chefs from New York or other places to come and cook in Vienna.  So definitely, come and check them out!

About Los Mexikas

Family owned restaurant.  They were originally Bolivians but our waiter grew up in Mexico and his family basically spent their lives in Mexico.

They have 2 outlets – one in Langegasse 14 (Taqueira) and the other which is newer is at Leopoldgasse 31 (Antojitos).  So, do be careful if you call in for a reservation.  Ensure that you actually turn up at the correct outlet.  We checked out the former (Taqueira) and although, this place is rather centrally located, it was quite a walk through the many small streets.

  • Service : 5 / 5, I have to give this to them!  Service was impeccable!  He was friendly, kind, attentive, and he certainly puts his customers first.  Best of all, he does this so sincerely and naturally.  In fact, he seems to enjoy his job – this is the key essence to quality customer service!

  • Service : 4.5 / 5, The guy servicing us was excellent, checking up on us just at the right times and servicing us with a smile. Most importantly, he genuinely seemed happy and enjoying what he was doing and to talk about the food and the restaurant.

Cafe Landtmann

Cafe Landtmann

A very elegant and edible Viennese history

August 222015

Too many cafes, too little time?

Vienna is a city famous for her many cafes. And we recently checked out a cafe where the menu is decent, there’s a good view and yes, the folks are friendly too!

Tucked in a good, strategic spot of the first district, Cafe Landtmann is just across the very pretty Rathaus.  This place is itself a very pretty and elegant cafe, and has both indoor and outdoor seating. We suggest outdoor seating unless the weather is baking hot.  And yes, they’ve got AC!!

Cafe Landtmann was built in 1873 so dining here is as good as engaging in culture and history – just like going to museums. Or the schloss. Ahh, it is good to eat…

We came here for brunch and we love it! The serving portion was not too gigantic so we didn’t feel too intimidated.

A place is only as great as its people. And these guys made our brunch fantastic! Thank you!

We were ambitious and made future plans for desserts but the belly said no. So, we’ll definitely come back again just to check out the sweets and cakes here.

About Cafe Landtmann
This is an original Viennese-style cafe.  It used to be regularly visited by famous personalities such as Sigmund Freud, Gustav Mahler and even Sir Paul Mc Cartney.

  • Total overall rating: 3.9 / 5
  • Ambience : 4 / 5, Relaxing, elegant, pretty and smoke-free!! And yes. They’ve got AC indoors if you don’t feel like evaporating under the sun outdoors.
  • Location : 4 / 5,  Central and easy to get to.
  • Food : 3.5 / 5.
  • Price : 3 / 5, It feels a bit pricier here than other old-school Viennese-style cafes but don’t be deterred by price.  It is totally worth it.
  • Service : 5 / 5, Service is fabulous.  The guy’s are always smiling and very attentive.  Besides, where else in Vienna do you get waiters posing for you to take photos?

Rating – Nicklas

Schweizerhaus

Schweizerhaus

Beer heaven for men, playground for children.

August 212015

Garden of Eden on earth.

Are you a beer fan?  We found a place in Vienna that serves original Czech beer (Budweiser Budvar) and fresh from the tap!  Sounds like heaven?  Yes, get in line lads!

image_1

Well, come in to the Garden of Eden – especially for the parents!

Schweizerhaus is a restaurant with a huge beer garden that serves you the classics from Schnitzel and yes order up the Hintere Schweinsstelze.  This is the pork knuckle, a house speciality, which is good enough to feed 3 adults at one go.  This could easily equate to about 6 to 8 Asian girls – or more.  So this food is not for the faint-hearted and for the very hungry.

image_3

Die Hintere Schweinsstelze – das original! This was 1 kilo-ish…

The pork knuckle is quite greasy so you definitely need to wash it down.  Yes, you got it!  With beer!  And ask for the Cesky Budvar!  That’s the original folks!

The great thing about Schweizerhaus is that the Prater is not just next to it.  Schweizerhaus is INSIDE the Prater. Yeps, it actually is.

image_5

More enlightened souls entering Eden

So, while you drink away with your chums, the kiddos too could have a party and go crazy at the various rides that the Prater has to offer.  It is probably the original model for family-friendly restaurants – only this time, the kids go wild outside.  But of course, do keep an eye on them.  (And the other eye on the beer?? We won’t tell your wife!)

This restaurant is said to have existed since 1766!  In other words, dining at the Schweizerhaus is getting up, close and personal with another piece of Vienna’s history.  Yes, yes, just like going to the museum – only this time with booze and roaring laughter.

image_2

Life inside Eden.  Potentially

image(1)

Here is where you sit back and have a jolly good time

And this is history you can touch, smell, taste and enjoy!  So the next time you feel like some culture or history, go to the Schweizerhaus!  And bring your kiddos along!  And if you are visiting or have guests, bring them here!  They will remember Vienna fondly.  Very fondly.

About Scheweizerhaus

This is a beer garden restaurant that has been around since 1766 and is located inside the Prater itself.  We do recommend taking the ride before the meal and before any beer.

Rating – Sue

  • Total overall rating: 3.8 / 5
  • Ambience : 5 / 5, This is a relaxing place where everyone can have a lot of fun – parents and kiddos alike.
  • Location : 4.5 / 5,  It might be not as central as one might like but it is a brilliant location for the family.
  • Food : 3.5 / 5, I find it too greasy for my liking although I am sure this is the original recipe and it is actually good stuff.
  • Price : 3 / 5, Quite on the pricey-end but for the size they serve up, it is a decent deal.
  • Service : 3 / 5, Service might be a little slow on weekends because they do get busy here.  They are generally polite and super quick with the food.  So you won’t be kept hungry for too long!

Rating – Nicklas

  • Total overall rating: 3.9 / 5
  • Ambience : 4 / 5,  You thirsty for a beer and lots of food? This is the place!
  • Location : 3.5 / 5, Look for the 117-m high swing swing carousel in the Prater and you will definitely find the restaurant.
  • Food : 4 / 5,  The servings are gigantic and the meet is very soft.
  • Price : 4 / 5, Considering the size of the meal, and that you can share it with your friend, its not a bad deal!
  • Service : 4 / 5, We visited them at a time where they where fully booked and still the food (and beers) arrived very quickly. Impressive for such a large spot!

Lubin

Croatian & fish restaurant

August 162015

Project: Fish and/ or Seafood.

Location: Vienna.

Mission: Impossible?

As a Central European and a land-locked city, fresh fish and seafood are not quite synonymous with Vienna.  But as two food lovers who grew up with seafood, we decided to hunt for a decent source and satisfy our cravings!

With the option to sit either indoors or outdoors, Lubin is a good spot especially for summer.  It was 50% seated when we were here and that was a week day – so we suppose it is best if you call in for a reservation if you’re planning on a dinner over the weekend.

Please ensure that this little guy is always in water (wine). *Hic*

The outdoor seating all taken up

We ordered platters to share – for both appetizers and main course.  And the restaurant gave us a plate of crispy fried anchovies as a nibble whilst waiting for our appetizers to arrive.

The seafood platter ready to be eaten

The food was alright, the location is well-positioned but the waiting staff isn’t the friendliest in town.  Well alright… One of the waiters (the younger one) was kind and helpful.  He took the time to explain the menu and was fairly patient throughout the course of our dinner.

It was said that they import the fish directly from their own boat in Croatia.  We felt that the seafood platter was only so-so and somehow not quite “it”.  The octopus was rather “rubber-like” in texture and the rest of the fish was lacking taste and the texture that you would expect from a fresh catch.

About Lubin
Croatian fish and seafood restaurant in Vienna’s district 3.  Also has a small shop next door where you can buy fish and seafood from them directly.

Rating – Sue

  • Total overall rating: 2.4 / 5
  • Ambience : 2.5 / 5, Great outdoor seating and plenty more space indoors.
  • Location : 3.5 / 5,  Superb location in district 3, it was relatively easy to find.
  • Food : 2 / 5, I wasn’t impressed by the taste and it was so so – especially for the price tag.
  • Price : 2 / 5, Highly priced. Definitely.
  • Service : 2 / 5, The younger waiting staff was kind and helpful.  But there was another older man who was not at all friendly throughout our meal.

Rating – Nicklas

  • Total overall rating: 2.8 / 5
  • Ambience : 3.5 / 5, They have a nice and calm spot outside on their terrace. The tables are not too close to each other, so on a good day you can still enjoy the company of your friends.
  • Location : 3 / 5, Not difficult to find at all, just take the U-bahn and get some fresh air during the short walk to them.
  • Food : 2.5 / 5, I was expecting more given that they have their own fish shop. Don’t get me wrong, the food was not bad, but it wasn’t fantastic either.
  • Price : 2.5 / 5, Too highly priced given the quality of the food.
  • Service : 2.5 / 5, I unfortunately got the feeling that they were more taking care of their regulars than a newcomer.  One of the staff really tried his best and did a good job, but it was fairly obvious who the other waiting staff were taking care of.

Grillin' good time!

August 82015

This summer, the heat is on.

For some of us, the favourite past time on hot summer evenings is to gather a few good friends, head outdoors and chillax over a few ice cold beers – somewhere…

So where is this somewhere?

How about hopping on to the U1 and head up for Alte Donau – this is where the grilling is happening.  We do recommend that you call in advance.  We made our reservation at least 2 weeks ahead.  And do call to inform if you are running late.  Although this was a week day, they were packed to the brim.

We figured out why – it is a grill-bar place of its own kind.

image_1 (2) - Copy

Outdoor dining with a view

Situated just along the Donau, Strand Café has this tranquil and relaxing atmosphere.  This place offers you a gorgeous city skyline as a backdrop whilst you enjoy spare ribs grilled on charcoal.  Of course the menu offers more than just spare ribs but we’ve heard quite a bit about their ribs which is said to be the best in town.  So we dived in right away!

A sneak peek into the menu

And the menu that we chose

image_2

This is a great place to enjoy the view and catch the sunset.

However, don’t expect much from their service.  The last time we called up, they weren’t at all helpful or friendly with the reservation and we were pretty close to cancelling the plan altogether.

About Strand Café

Outdoor bbq & grill bar with a great skyline of Vienna.  Perfect place for a casual hang out with friends with potential over-eating.

Rating – Sue

  • Total overall rating: 3.1 / 5
  • Ambience : 5 / 5, A cool place to chillax with friends outdoors with decent grub and a good view
  • Location : 3 / 5,  The location offers a pretty view but can be quite a B!*t@&% to get to – if you don’t intend to drive…
  • Food : 2.5 / 5, It was alright and I have to say I’ve had better
  • Price : 3 / 5, A bit on the pricey side but they have gotten popular recently.
  • Service : 2 / 5

Rating – Nicklas

  • Total overall rating: 3.2 / 5
  • Ambience : 4 / 5,  A nice spot next to the Alte Donau to relax and enjoy the sunset
  • Location : 3 / 5, Bring your iphone or samsung and google maps will take you there
  • Food : 3.5 / 5, The portions are massive and the beers keep coming! The meat comes with a very nice charcoal flavor so this is a good spot when you want to satisfy your bbq cravings
  • Price : 3 / 5, It’s not the cheapest spot in Vienna but ok price for what you get.
  • Service : 2.5 / 5, Be hungry enough to take care of the big portion, but not too hungry to survive the wait.

Tsutenkaku Sushi-Haus

Tsutenkaku Sushi-Haus

Sushi. Like it is in Japan

August 52015

Do you love sushi & sashimi?

If you are a sushi snob (or sushi enthusiast), you will comb through the city of Vienna and probably feel like you “have to settle” for something that is rather okay-ish just to relieve that craving.  But worry no more, for we have found THE place that will certainly appeal and meet the standards of our fellow sushi snobs.

Tsutenkaku is a privately-run restaurant.  Located strategically in the popular and busy 6th district, but yet tucked in an easy-to-find and yet not so noisy lane, this place is a hidden gem!

The sushi bar where you can sit down, select from the counter and see the magic happen.

mail.google.com2

The interior done up with a slight touch of Japan.

mail.google.com3

Just a few from the sake selection

This is a small restaurant and could probably seat up to a maximum of 24 persons – if the chef feels like it.  And yes, if he really feels like it.  But we love him for this!  Here’s why…

He gives you his undivided attention and personalised service, and he also believes in giving his guests ample space between each group of diners.  Over dinner, he would even come by our table for a chat.  He would tell us about his travels back to Japan or to the vineyards. We like it here!  No, we love it!

Since he is the chef and owner, he also selects each and every item that he buys and serves to his guests.  And for this very reason, we never order from the menu.  We ask him what is good or fresh today and then say something along the lines of we fancy a plateful of sashimi, some sushi and perhaps some temaki (for now, and then more later, and oh which good wines would you suggest?)

And we always leave his restaurant very very happy.

We would say that this is our favourite Japanese restaurant in Vienna.  The ambience reminds us of Japan and the quality too.  In fact, he once told us that his relatives come to check in on him every now and then – as a quality control.  But we suspect, they are there for the yummy food – just like us!

Tip: We strongly suggest that you call in advance to make a reservation.  Really, we mean it!

About Tsutenkaku

Authentic Japanese sushi and sashimi run by a Japanese owner and chef himself – just the way it should be and it is back in Japan.

Rating – Sue

  • Total overall rating: 4.8 / 5

For a drink with a view!

Rooftop drinking with a view

A beautiful weather in a beautiful city calls for a need to chillax somewhere equally pretty, in the centre, with a view and taking it easy.

Just a block away from the famous Stephansdom, and diagnolly across from Zanoni and Zanoni ice cream, is Hotel Lamee.  Head on for the rooftop terrace bar called The Roof and ask for a few drinks that you must try the Austrian classics such as Aperol Spritz, Weiß-Süß or Weiß-Sauer. Or Sue’s personal favourite, the refreshing Hugo (prosecco, elderflower juice and mint).

And after which, simply sit back, sip through your lovely drink, enjoy the rooftop view of Vienna and tell yourself I love this gorgeous city!!

Afterall, as the locals say it immer schoen gemuetlich!

Xocolat

Xocolat

A chocolicious mecca in the heart of Vienna

August 22015

Chocoholics alert!

Vienna is a city famous for desserts, cakes and fine pleasures in life.  However, whenever we think of chocolates, we think of Belgian pralines.  Or we might think of the Swiss chocolates.  But what about Vienna?  What are some of the finest and best chocolates of Vienna.

Right in the heart of the city is a delicious, chocolatey gem called Xocolat.  Made with the finest quality, the chocolate is also delicate and heavenly.  You can choose from truffles to pralines, to chocolate bars, liqueurs and even cacao powder.

Loaded with more than 400 varieties of chocolates, this is potentially a chocolate heaven in Vienna.

Not only is their selection extensive, they choose quality very rigorously and have won several awards.  And, we even found quite a spread of items that are “biological” (also known as bio or organic).

The shop appears small from the outside but walk in and it is actually rather big and spacious.  So it gives us, chocoholics, that very special kind of feeling – magical.  Yes, the magic of chocolates.

image_5

The very nice old-style interior.

image (2)

Looks like a library with dark wooden book shelves loaded with chocolates, doesn’t it?  Perhaps that co-relation between intelligence and chocolates is…  REAL!!

image_4

Oooooh… and heaven opens itself up and rained chocolates, yessss!!

image_2

More chocoliciousness for the taking.  Don’t just look, eat these fine pralines up!!

image_1

With even more flavours or fillings available and they occasionally go on sale too

image_4 (2)

Selection of bio cacao powder especially flown in from Africa

image_3 (2)

Our personal favourite.  Because we simply love noisette (hazelnuts)

So the next time you are in Vienna, or have guests or in need to buy presents for families and friends at home… and they happened to be graciously chocoholics, this is definitely one chocolatey, happy option!  This way, you brought them a piece of heaven…  as they said it themselves Xocolat macht glücklich!  Xocolat makes you happy!

About Xocolat

A Viennese chocolatier of a fine quality.  They have 4 stores – 2 shops in Vienna, 1 in Baden and Linz each.

Café Central

Café Central

For a coffee in the traditional style

July 302015

A Viennese history so delicious.

You probably have seen Café Central, walked past it, seen the long queue and gave up.  It has a gorgeous interior, perfectly located in the centre and has a counter packed with yummy looking sweets and cakes.  No, not just that.  Check out their menu!

The history of Café Central dates back to 1876.   Whilst this place is smacked in the centre, said to be very touristy and can get really packed and busy, we confess we are only one step closer to having our very own stammtisch (a table for the regular guests)…  We love this place!  Its interior décor and high ceilings gives its unique charm and brings you back into time.

image_1 (2)

The very nice old style interior.

image_3 (2)

A croissant that makes even a French person happy!

image_3

And a wide selection of cakes to satisfy your sweet cravings.

This café serves all the Viennese classics from schnitzel to goulash (although this is Hungarian), palatschinken to strudel, and more!  What we truly enjoy at Café Central is their breakfast menu.

We ordered Sisi breakfast (which comes with a glass of sparkling wine) and Altenberg breakfast (and added another glass of sparkling wine to be fair).

The serving is generous, the service was good (for a place smacked in the centre and constantly loaded with tourists).  We feel that the price is good value for money.  It is a place right in the heart of the city, highly famous, never short of a queue waiting for tables and yet they never charged you a ridiculous price when they could (and start cashing in on tourists’ money).  And all these put together is the reason why we like them and keep coming back!

For the perfect start of the day!  Phrost!!

About  Café Central

In the late 19th century, this was the watering hole for famous names such as Sigmund Freud, Vladimir Lenin and more.  Café Central has a very wide selection of gorgeous cakes on the glass display and delicious home-made strudel and (you have to try this massive) kaiserschmarrn.  It is a dining experience.

  • Food : 3.5 / 5, Great for sampling Austrian classics
  • Price : 4 / 5
  • Service : 3 / 5, I find the service alright.  They will give you the space and won’t keep breathing down your neck (I love this!!), aren’t as grumpy as what one would expect in most Austrian f&b establishments – but don’t expect warmth.  They are professionals who seem to be well attuned to tourists and their stammgästen.

  • Food : 4 / 5, Having lived in France, I really do like a place that takes full care of their croissant and makes them as good as they do in croissant HQ!
  • Price : 4 / 5, Even though the price is higher than that of the local neighborhood cafe, you get high quality of food for your extra bucks spent.
  • Service : 3.5 / 5, The service is not super quick but they are fairly friendly and professional.

Café Gerstner
June 282015

Tea time with a view. Lets go!

And a gorgeous one. This is Cafe Gerstner with a different look and feel – yes, we’ll get to this one in a bit. You will be welcomed with a wide selection of colourful and delicious looking cakes and pralines, and yes sparkling wines. A perfect heaven for the sweet tooth. And definitely a great way to start your journey into the city!

Too much cakes, too little time

Even more cakes…

Stairway to heaven…

Climb upstairs for more! Yes, you can afford to climb for what you’re about to bite into is a chunk of sinful sweetness. After all, Vienna is probably sugar capital of central Europe. Or Europe. Oh well.

Hmmm, decisions, decisions…

And they all look too pretty to be eaten…

And the view is fabulous. Try to grab one by the window because you’d be looking out to the gorgeous majestic state opera. Music is in the air, cakes and chocolates are dancing on your tastebuds – sounds like a perfect day, doesn’t it?

And gentlemen, this is how, you keep your lady happy! And potentially shop lesser too… distract them with sweets!!

A sweet little raspberry tart.

For the non-sweet tooth, how about shrimps?

Our only comment about this place is about the look and feel. Their previous colours were dark blue themed against dark wood and a bit of gold, if at all noticeable. Now, the interior is in light green and gold – uncannily similar to the French Laduree.

About Gertsner

Founded in 1847, Gerstner is probably a household name when it comes to quality pastry. They served the imperial court in 1873 and today, has a few outlets and a culinary school too. This is however, the only outlet with the majestic view.

Pho Saigon

Pho Saigon

An introduction to Vietnamese food

June 212015

Vietnamese food. Beyond the Pho

It is a hot, sticky summer. Being an Asian living in Vienna, that means one typically seeks a good bowl of piping hot Asian soup noodle. Now this sounded rather ironic to Nicklas and our friends. Why on earth would anybody want to have a bowl of hot soup in the middle of baking hot summer? The answer is simple: one needs to make up for the fluid loss.

And we decided to hunt for a good bowl of Vietnamese Pho – of course, we ended having more.

The famous Pho

Considered as one of the healthiest cuisine in the world, Vietnamese cuisine is rather herbal in taste and uses a lot of herbs and vegetables. It less insanely spicy when compared to her Asian cousins such as the Thais, Malaysians or the champion, Sichuan Chinese.

And we found one that was rather decent.

The starter platter was yummy – from the fresh spring rolls to the fried ones, beef salad and glass noodle salad.

The beef salad

The glass noodle salad

And the Pho… oh yes, this is the moment of truth. We think it was rather salty – so please don’t bother adding in the fish sauce or soy sauce. We guess the taste had been adjusted to meet the local preferences. The serving size was generous. It was a humongous bowl and that itself is a full meal in itself. You won’t need more.

The famous Pho, up close and personal!

Another friend had a vegetarian version and let’s just say he was the first to finish his bowl. I guess the yumminess kept him busy and very focused. Yes indeed.

The vegetarian glass noodles served with spring rolls stuffed with tofu

But since we came with a group, we ordered more to share. The thing we liked the most was the deep-friend octopus and the rest were average.

The beef

The deep fried crispy fish

And then, there was dessert and traditional Vietnamese coffee. The dessert was tasty but make sure you actually have space in your belly. The coffee was different compared to European style. It was fruity and does not have roasted flavour, it tasted sweet as if it was coffee with baileys. But hey, if you like coffee with baileys, this is the deal for you!!

Dessert. We don’t remember the name but it was yummy!

They used to be at the Naschmarkt several years ago and we were told that today, they have a few outlets. We have get to try the other outlets. But if you have, do let us know.

All you need is ice cream!

Summer in Vienna can get mercilessly hot. And there many ways to cool off – thank goodness for that. The pool, the ice cold beer and best solution of all – ice cream!

Keep it cool!

This is ice cream like no other. Firstly, they have quite interesting or rather quirky flavours such as holunderblüte (elderflower), topfencreme (curd cream), Pistazie-salz-muskat (Salted pistachios with muscat), Graumohn (grey poppy yes you read this right) and the winner for this “quirky flavour category” is – kürbiskernöl (pumpkin seed oil). But after trying it, we quite like it!

All the choice that you need…

It is a small store and it might be difficult to spot them. But do not fear – spot the crowd, the fellow ice-cream knowers. And how exactly? Stroll down past the Stephansdom towards Schwedenplatz along the Rotenrumstrasse. And once you find a long queue that snakes along the street – quite literally – these are your fellow ice-cream fans. Join up and order up!! Don’t worry about the queue, it goes pretty quickly.

The exterior of the store.

Der/die/das interior of the store.

Lastly, enjoy! And tell us what you think!

About Eis Greissler

The milk source comes from a small family farm in Lower Austria and yes people, the milk is fully organic. They use only natural ingredients and try their very best to use organic and fair-trade products. And yes, whilst their flavours are quite different, they are still working on even more exciting flavours.

They have 2 outlets and we particularly like the one in the old town. Well because they open till 11pm! It gives a good excuse to stroll down after a meal and oh, did we spot ice cream!

Naschmarkt

Naschmarkt and the hood

A centrally located market but be warned this is a tourist trap. At least for us, resident food-lovers of Vienna.

We decided to give this place a shot though – because for some reasons, if you do visit Vienna, you should come here. And for many residents or locals, we hang out here from time to time anyways…

So what options have we got here? LOADS. You name it. From the market, fresh fish, spices, Russian stall, Asian-everything-mishmash-sort-of-place, middle eastern food, sweets, salads and yes, souvenirs for family and friends back home. But expect to pay quite a bit and dont expect too much taste-wise.

Confused? So were we!! Although we thought we knew what we wanted at first. 🙂 So we decided to have everything. Okay, not everything literally, but as many as our eyes fancy and our bellies could take.

Hummus with grilled aubergines

Curry chicken with hummus

Chicken with tortilla

Goat Cheese salad

Le Très Chic… Grilled asparagus and quinoa salad

But as we said before, be warned, this place IS A TOURIST TRAP. At least, in our view.

About Naschmarkt
Centrally located and lively, the Naschmarkt is a vintage market that dates back to the 16th century and you can find almost anything here. It is a place to buy your fresh produce, spices and other special ethnic foods from all over the world – such as French cheese, Chinese tea and so on. Having said that, it isn’t the only place of course but Naschmarkt certainly has its charm. And be warned that shopping or a meal here will hit your wallet – pretty hard. And we mean it, people!

Palmenhouse

A chillaxing meal with a view

June 142015

A chillaxing meal with a view

Once upon a time, in 1823, there used to be a greenhouse that was built within the city walls of beautiful Vienna. Today, it is known as “Palmenhaus” or the house of Palms. It is home to a butterfly atrium and next to it is Palmenhaus – a cafe, bar and brasserie.

The only place where you can find palm trees in Austria – at Palmenhaus, indoors.

Outdoor sitting with a view…

Centrally located next to the Albertina and state opera in the heart of the city, this is also a good place to chillax and enjoy the sun.  So when it is hot and sunny, what could be better is to enjoy some grilled seafood. We ordered up a light but tasty seafood grill platter and some calamari to share. It was delicious.

Grilled calamari…

And the grilled seafood platter…

And because it was hot (no because we love food – this is the truth!), we ordered a some sweet desserts. Simply perfect when it is hot out here.

Guilt part 1…

Guilt part 2…

And yes, now that we have finished our meals, We arent rushing it, we will walk across towards a fountain and perhaps, lie down on the grass. Afterall, when in Vienna, do as the Viennese do. Guten Apetit! Mahl Zeit!

About Palmenhaus

Definitely a good place to chillax in the centre of Vienna. The food is decent and the service staff is kind and they are well-staffed – so you will not be ignored. One point to note though, it can get quite touristy.

Café Menta

Lazy Sunday?

Fancy a lie in and a late brekkie? Nopes, let’s make a brunch. We found that place for you!

Smacked in the centre of Radetskyplatz and in the heart of district 3, you can do all these and the portions are decent. We ordered up a small Menta Teller, scrambled eggs and toast and yes, as we said earlier, we are happy with the serving size. The taste was alright – as long as you weren’t expecting Jamie Oliver or Gordon Ramsay in the kitchen. Given that we fancied a lazy day and a place near-ish to us, this was a good choice regardless.

A healthy yet yummy choice…

Scrambled eggs

The toast – a very generous serving size

The Menta Tellercame with grilled aubergines and courgettes, hummus, olives, feta, tomato-onion salsa (or tabouleh) sort of thing and a portion of pumpkin seed bread. We really like this one and the small serving was generous enough. The toast came with ham topped with sunny-side up, served with ketchup on the side and this was a fail-proof item. However, the scrambled eggs was a different story. Its consistency felt more like a savoury egg pudding and weren’t too impressed.

The full spread…

The staff were generally friendly and will leave you in peace – you could hang around for as long as you like and imprint your butt into the seats – or carve if you prefer. And they will still be smiling and won’t show you the door.

So, all in all, this was a good chill out place to be lazy, grab a brunch, have your coffee and take it easy.

About Menta Cafe

Your naschmarkt cafe now available as your neighbourhood corner cafe. When we were there, there were only 4 staff – 2 in the kitchen and 2 in the front-of-house, and they did an excellent job because they were fully seated (ok, minus the outdoor seating because it was raining then).

Tutti Frutti Summer

Staying hydrated in the summer. Whilst ice cream is a good naughty food, on other days, we want to stay refreshed and yes, hydrated without worrying about the added sugar and the waist line.

This juice bar is probably your healthy and tasty option to drinking up. Loaded with fruity goodness, your drinks are definitely guilt-free. Well, unless you asked for the smoothies and if you define smoothy as rather naughty…

We ordered Colada Feeling and Yoga Relax. Whilst both drinks were refreshing, they certainly came with a price tag – a good 10.00 € for our order. Quite pricey to stay hydrated, we think. And the colada was almost a liquid meal. It was good but rather filling – drink it before a meal if you are part of the “Waistline Watchers Anonymous”.

Love sugar, love cakes?  We have the place!!

We think we found heaven – all-you-can-eat naughtiness for only €12.00 plus a cup of hot drink (tea, coffee, chocolate).  This is perfect for that in-between Saturday shopping or if you are running errands about town, and need a sugar rush (oh yes, trust us!).  And Park Hyatt offers this every Saturday and Sunday.

Service was fantastic – and not just because this is a 5 star hotel – but they were actually attentive and sincere.  Su ordered a bowl of hot soup because for some reasons, her belly wanted that before digging into the sweets.  And when she went straight for the dessert buffet, the staff asked if they should cancel the soup order because we all know that one should have the soup first and then, the sweets.  That was kind and attentive because most places would not bother with asking.  And we can tell you the garlicky soup was yummy – so yes Su ordered it regardless!

English tea time

This place reminds us of Alice in wonderland – ok, not us but Sue (who is the lady here).  Everything about this place is cute, adorable and so girlish.  They even have a chair that looks like high heels – perfect for any shoe-lovers (Sue included).

Fancy a good hearty English breakfast?  Yes we do!

About Café Little Britain

We came along with our hunger and we were fully satisfied.  We had the standard naughty English breakfast with sausages, eggs, beans, grease, toast – yes bring them on!!  Feed us! And scones, oooooh momma!!

And if you have a sweet tooth, we had this delicious cake (which sorry folks, we got distracted and forgot its name) but it’s loaded with desiccated coconut and chocolate.  It had a good balance and wasn’t over powering– you know the kind of sweetness that makes you feel diabetic or your kidneys would scream after…  And all the cakes are home-made.

So, what’s our take on this place?  Food was generally good but service was so-so.  The lady was really kind, attentive and quick but she seems to be the only actually offering a service.  When we asked for wifi password and actually wanted to place a second order, one of the the men simply walked past us and decided to stand behind the counter – although he very clearly saw us waving and the lady indicated this to him.  Maybe he felt safer behind the counter?  Maybe it wasn’t his day?  Whatever it was, we weren’t impressed.

Rating – Sue

  • Total overall rating: 2.4 / 5
  • Ambience: 3 / 5,  Cute, sweet, original, they certainly put great effort into the interior décor.
  • Location: 1 / 5,  Quite a pain in the posterior to get here… and if it rains, just to give a more realistic Brit feeling, there is no way I’m coming!

  • Service: 2 / 5

Rating – Nicklas

  • Total overall rating: 2.8 / 5
  • Ambience: 3 / 5
  • Location: 3 / 5,  A bit out of the center, so go with your car. Lots of parking spots infront of the place though.
  • Food: 3 / 5,  The full English breakfast was good and did its purpose.
  • Price: 3 / 5
  • Service: 2 / 5,  They try to be a bit more friendly than that of your standard Vienna cafe but all the staff don’t quite make it.

Bakery, burger, brunch

Sundays are synonymous with sleeping in and brunches – well at least for us.  So waking up to make brekkie is like meh, not gonna happen!! Unless Nicklas makes it! Thank you

But hey, as very resourceful people, we have solutions to every situation.  So we decided to check out a bakery-confectionery-bistro (oder, auf unsere minimalist Deustch, bäckerei-patisserie-bistro) called Joseph at Landstraße.

Mmmmm, what to eat, what to eat…

Extras for a quick grocery shopping.

And even more food!

The muhammara

The burger

and the club sandwish.

About Joseph Bäckerei Patisserie Bistro

All organic ingredients and they bake the bread on their own. And they were yummy – ok, we didn’t camp overnight to try out every single one of them. Although we’ve been here a few times and ordered various items from the menu.

This time, we had the muhammara, a burger and a club sandwich.  While we generally find that food tastes good here, the fries for some reason needs serious help.  They just look so browned, old, soggy and almost floppy.

Rating – Sue

  • Total overall rating: 2.8 / 5
  • Ambience : 2 / 5, Clean, airy but the acoustics is quite bad – do not come here if you spot a crying baby inside or if you suffer from a chronic hangover. Unless you fancy bionic hearing sensation…
  • Location : 3 / 5, Easy to be found and highly accessible via the U-bahn, but parking is a bi@%§&!
  • Food : 3 / 5, Was alright. Taste was good, muhammara was fine, burger was good but I am deeply disappointed by the fries.
  • Price : 3 / 5, Okay pricing for the sizing.
  • Service : 3 / 5

Rating – Nicklas

  • Total overall rating: 2.8 / 5
  • Ambience : 3 / 5, Make sure to get a seat outside on their terrace, which is really nice, as it’s just way too loud inside.
  • Location : 4 / 5, Very easy to get to with the U-bahn.
  • Food : 4 / 5, The bread that they have is excellent!
  • Price : 3 / 5, Okay pricing for the sizing.
  • Service : 3 / 5, The service is fairly quick and nice, but they could do with some more training.

Aroi Thai

Aroi Thai

Truly homemade Thai food

March 272015

Thai in the city

It all began when a good friend visited us from Thailand.  We thought oh we could be good considerate hosts and take her too a Thai place and have some real Thai food.  As we started to look around, we then realised… real Thai food, heh?  In Vienna you say?  Hmmm…

Challenge accepted!

We started asking for recommendations from our friends (a.k.a. fellow under-cover food detectives, yes we are everywhere), shot-listed a few likely suspects and finally decided for Aroi Thai.  And here’s our take…

Som Tam or Papaya Salad. Deliciousness is part of the deal here!!

Spring rolls filled with prawns. Naughty but good stuff!

The yummilicious Gua Tiao Tomyam Soup

The even better crispy duck in curry sause

Laab – a traditional fare from Issan, north of Thailand. Seriously spicy. Ok, we asked for it!

Simple but famously delicious Pad Thai.

Another yummy crispy fish. Nom nom nom nom…

About Aroi Thai

A small-ish family-run restaurant owned by husband and wife.  She is Thai – this explains the quality in terms of taste (and spiciness – if you don’t believe us, ask Nicklas!)  Very kind and hospitable, and good news!  They are open everyday and till late – except Sundays where they open only from 1600hrs onwards.  Oh yes, we tested with saying till very late and they were so patient and hospitable with us.  Try that at other restaurants and you will be reminded “nicely”.  And yes, worth checking before coming.  As they are family owned, they might also close the operation when they need to visit Thailand.  In general, we are both very happy with this place and it is one of our favorites.

Rating – Sue

  • Total overall rating: 4.2 / 5
  • Ambience: 3 / 5,  Clean, friendly, humble and very welcoming.
  • Location: 4 / 5.
  • Food: 4 / 5,  It has the right balance in the taste and ingredients used.  It feels like good home-cooked meals and that is very nice.  Serving size is generous and a good portion. Although, I’d consider it rather mild and yes you can ask to pimp up the spicy / hot level and Nicklas did that.
  • Price: 5 / 5.
  • Service: 5 / 5,  Oh my god, this thing exists here!

Rating – Nicklas

  • Total overall rating: 4.2 / 5
  • Ambience: 3 / 5.
  • Location: 4 / 5,  I’ts easy enough to get here with the U-bahn it is also hidden enough so that all the tourists can’t find it. Hidden gem!  Score!!!
  • Food: 5 / 5,  Perfectly balanced taste and if you ask, they can make it as spicy as you want without it being overpowering.
  • Price: 5 / 5,  For the quality of the food, it’s really nicely priced!
  • Service: 5 / 5,  Extremely good service and they are genuinely welcoming and take good care of you at the restaurant.

Best burger in Vienna

March 42015

Mahl zeit! Meat time!

Our need to stock up on iron and standard red meat protein took us to Hotel Daniel.  Tucked away in the 3rd district and just next to the Belvedere, this is quite a neat place for hang out and easy dining.  The ambience is relaxing and the menu is simple with a reasonable selection.

The starters straight from the Nachmarkt

The fabulous American hotdog

Refreshing for a hot day, perfect choice!

About Hotel Daniel

Urban, modern and easy dining – we believe this place has become popular recently.  We’ve been here several times and we feel that the kitchen does an excellent job.  So, do come with an appetite for a good burger or a good steak – they do a fantastic job at this!

Rating – Sue

  • Total overall rating: 2.9 / 5
  • Ambience: 3 / 5
  • Location: 5 / 5
  • Food: 2.5 / 5, Don’t get me wrong – food was excellent but ah the serving size for the fries was pathetic. What can you say?  I am a fries snob!  And the pavlova wasn’t anything to scream about – it was soggy.
  • Price: 3 / 5
  • Service: 3 / 5

Rating – Nicklas

  • Total overall rating: 3 / 5
  • Ambience: 3 / 5,  A place where you can relax and enjoy their staropraomen on the tab without feeling that the next customer is waiting for you to leave.
  • Location: 3 / 5
  • Food: 4 / 5,  Their burgers are on my top five list for Vienna! If you have some American friends or colleagues visiting, then take them here and they will feel like home with the food.
  • Price: 3 / 5
  • Service: 2 / 5,  Although I am very happy with the people working in the kitchen, the waiters need to step it up.
